Hello! I am Lindsay, writer/creator of the Albuquerque based life & style blog, Middle of Somewhere. Jess was so gracious to have me to guest post today for Positively Oakes and I couldn’t be more excited! I am currently 28 weeks pregnant and can’t wait to welcome our first baby girl into the world in a few short months. I was initially intimidated by the thought of having to buy (and wear) maternity clothes, especially maternity pants, however I quickly learned that they are by far the most important investment you can make for your ever-changing body. Today I wanted to share some of my tips for dressing your growing baby bump.
1. Like I just mentioned, make sure to invest in a few good pairs of maternity jeans/pants. I practically live in this pair of skinny jeans from Old Navy! Again, they are not a huge investment and usually run around $30 a pair, which is extremely affordable in the world of maternity clothes. I personally prefer the full panel style and am taking full advantage of being pregnant because it means I don’t have to worry about buttons and zippers for the next few months. I tried a button extended for the first few months of my pregnancy but did not like how my button would pop out and show through my shirt. Full panel pants are a life saver! I know a lot of mama’s to be are intimated by the full panel, so if that is the case for you you can totally find comfortable jeans with a low or side panel instead. I would also recommend buying a pair that you love in two sizes: your pre-pregnancy size and one size up. For me personally, I have needed to size up about half way through my second trimester and found that the full panel on my regular size jeans was getting too tight to accommodate my growing bump.
2. Incorporate as many of your pre-pregnancy tops as possible. Maternity clothes can get expensive and although it is a great excuse to go shopping, your bank account may not feel the same way. I am 7 months pregnant now and get by with wearing many of my pre-pregnancy tees and tanks as layering pieces. If you feel like yours are too tight or short, depending on the fit you preferred pre-pregnancy, Old Navy and Target have some great options for under $15 each. I also love to wear my non-maternity button down tops and cardigans open with a layering tee or tank underneath (plus it’s a great way to show off your growing baby bump!)
3. Accessories are your best friend. I have always been more of an accessory girl and find myself drawn to them even more now that I am pregnant. As with most girls, I have had my fair share of “I have nothing to wear” days, and trust me, the likelihood of this occurring while pregnant is far greater than it was before! Whether it’s not being able to fit into one of my favorite pre-pregnancy tops or only being able to stick with flat shoes (thank you back pain), I am always able to turn to accessories and jewelry to make any outfit feel special. I love a good statement necklace or stack of bracelets! Scarves and hats have also been a fabulous go-to of mine because they bring a special element to any outfit, especially one that is very simple (i.e. a tee shirt and jeans, which happens to be the starting point for most of my outfits).
I hope that these tips were helpful for you soon to be mama’s out there! Make sure to follow along as I share the rest of my pregnancy style journey on Middle of Somewhere and I would love for you to stop by to let me know some of your favorite ways to style your bump!
