As a new Mom, actually a Mom in general, most days I don’t feel beautiful exactly. In fact I generally feel like a hot mess most days. Between trying to work, being spit up on, tears, giggles, sneezes and breastfeeding I’m pretty hard on myself. I would say it’s safe to say most of us probably are. How do you feel beautiful when you didn’t have time to brush your hair and everything is in fast forward? The reality is, Motherhood is hard. I’ll say it, it’s not a secret and it shouldn’t be. When I say it’s hard it doesn’t mean I don’t absolutely love it, in fact it’s the opposite. I LOVE being a Mom and I love every single part of Motherhood, including all the hard parts. That being said it’s messy and messy doesn’t usually make you feel beautiful.
I’ve learned something though, embrace the parts that do make you feel beautiful. What makes you feel beautiful? It doesn’t have to be physical, in fact most of the things that make me feel beautiful aren’t physical. Here’s what makes me feel beautiful and what I try and focus on during the hard days, the days where I REALLY don’t feel beautiful.
The feeling of being needed, you know when your little is so tired and crying, but all they want to do is cuddle or have you close to them. This makes me feel like the most important, most beautiful woman in the world. When Blake needs me my world stops and it reminds me why I’m important, why Motherhood is the best and you know what’s even better than that? When you’re the only one that can calm them down. I know that sounds selfish and ridiculous, but how great does it make you feel to take your sweet little in your arms and instantly have them calm down and snuggle up with you? That’s a guilty pleasure and the best thing in the world.
Giggles, hearing Blake laugh helps me KNOW I’m doing something right. She’s happy, she’s healthy and she’s having fun! She loves me and when someone loves you, you can’t help but feel beautiful. Plus, smiles make the prettiest girls and when you’re baby is smiling you know you’re smiling!
Getting ready, this is more of a physical one, but sometimes it’s just necessary. When you’ve been in sweats forever and haven’t showered for three days, getting ready is all you need to make you feel put together. Did you know it’s totally okay for you to take 20 minutes for yourself? WHAT?! Ha! It is, this one is hard for me to realize, but sometimes Blake just has to hang with Dad or lay on the bed so I can spend a little time on myself. Heck, sometimes it’s even worth it to wake up 20 minutes before her so I can brush my hair and put make up on. That’s only if I get a good night sleep though 😉
Confidence, this one is kind of a funny joke actually because most days I’m the least confident person out there. However, there are things that make me feel confident and that I feel confident in. One, writing, I love writing and I feel confident in it. So if I’m down and not feeling beautiful you better believe you can probably find me writing. That’s my comfort zone and comfort zones make you feel beautiful without a doubt, even if you don’t realize it.
Moral of the story: do things that make you feel beautiful because you are. We all are. Motherhood makes us beautiful. Days are hard and sometimes draining, but how strong are we to raise tiny humans?! So make a list, find the things that make you beautiful and focus on them when you’re down. Some days it’s harder than others to get that mind set, that’s just the reality of life, there will be tough days but we will get through it. The thing to remember is…you’re beautiful, we’re beautiful and being a Mom is the best.
