The setting is EVERYTHING. Make sure your lighting is good, your background is pretty and your babe will be able to easily grow with this surrounding. Here’s the thing to remember, when you’re taking their newborn or month 1 pictures, it’s going to be EASY–they’ll most likely sleep through the picture and look perfect and precious while doing it. However, they’re going to grow! By the time they’re even just 4 months, they’ll want to move, cry or really do anything other than taking pictures. This is where your surroundings are KEY! You will most likely want to use the same background for all 12 pictures (it makes for a better collage in the end). Make sure it’s a baby friendly environment, small enough to where they can’t run away too far and appealing to keep them there!
Clothing is key for these photos for several reasons! Put them in something comfortable, like pieces from Carter’s Little Baby Basics Collection. Their items are comfortable, but so cute. Which means your babe will be much happier, but Mama still gets cute pictures! Make sure their in clothing that they can move around in, act natural and that will bring out their happiest self!
The Milestone Card:
Since these are milestone pictures, you’re obviously going to include a little card that says “1 Month”, “2 Month”, etc. Carter’s makes REALLY cute milestone cards that are perfect for these pictures. If your babe is under the age of 4 months, it will be much easier to place these cards. I recommend setting them next to them if they’re asleep and swaddled up or putting them in a cute picture frame if they’re more “grabby”. If they’re above 4 months and getting more mobile, it’s a little trickier. As you can see we propped ours up on a cute pillow in the playroom! You can do that, try and let them hold it or again the picture frame idea is great because they can’t bend or eat it 😉
The Actual Photo:
This is the fun part! Seriously though, it should be totally fun, not stressful or frustrating. So keep that in mind when starting the pictures! First, make sure your babe is in a good mood. If it’s an off day where they missed a nap and are having mega meltdowns, it’s probably not the best day to take pictures. When they’re brand new, pictures are generally easy! Swaddle them up in a cute swaddle or a tiny Carter’s Baby Basic bodysuit, let them sleep and snap away! When they’re older, you have to get a little more creative. For Blake’s 11 month pictures it consisted of a lot of dancing, puffs and her favorite song “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”. Even if there’s a couple of meltdowns, roll with it–really they kind of make for cute pictures 😉 When actually taking the picture, just keep snappin’! Seriously, take a million pictures in between dancing and trying to make your babe laugh because guess what–you’ll most likely catch a couple of good ones!
Editing is what makes a picture, “picture perfect”. If you have a professional camera, I highly recommend Lightroom for editing your pictures. If you’re using you phone-my favorite two apps are Snapseed and A Color Story. Brighten your pictures up, soften them and turn any saturation down when needed!
Now, let me chat about our favorite pieces from the Carter’s Little Baby Basics Collection! Seriously this entire collection is honestly my favorite and when I mentioned it above for the clothing to use in these pictures–I meant it. These pieces are so soft, so cute and there’s a HUGE variety. I’ve put Blake in this collection since she was born, it’s my go to for her!
