When we were in the process of building our home I had one request, okay…maybe more..but one MAIN request. Since I work from home and am also a Mom at the same time I wanted a space that could combine and accommodate both of those things. A bonus room seemed to be the most appropriate fit, so we set out to build a home with just that!
Now, about a year later from when Marcus and I first had this discussion, we are in our new home and have been for a few months! And guess what? It has my bonus room! It’s seriously amazing because I have Blake’s playroom on one side and my office on the other. It’s made it so much easier to get things done while she plays and has her own little area. However…we’ve had one problem and it’s been a big problem.
THE HEAT.
Like holy cow I know it’s true when people say “heat rises”, but I had no idea it could be this different. I mean downstairs will be around 70 degrees and upstairs is like 80-82, if not hotter. It’s almost unbearable to sit up there and play/work. BUT, I’ve found a solution and I figured I need to public service announcement this for y’all ASAP.
The Frigidaire Gallery Cool Connect.
It’s game changing y’all, plus it’s tech savvy and connects right to your smart phone. It has Wi-Fi control and you can control it from anywhere on your smart device. Turn the unit on or off, change temperature, control modes, and adapt fan speeds to best meet your comfort. Which means if I am away from my little office, but know I am going to head back soon, I can just turn the air down so it’s cool and ready right from my phone.
I literally am obsessed and still trying to figure out why I didn’t have this for the last few months we’ve been here. It makes it easier to work, it’s sleek looking in my office space, saves money and well..Mama is much happier in a cooler space—let’s be real. 😉
Now, as promised—three tips to making work, work with a baby nearby.
Tip #1: Just go with the flow. Things won’t be perfect, I can promise you that—it will probably be noisy some days, toys will be thrown and meltdowns will happen. Just wing it, do the best you can and expect these things to happen. I’ve learned that when I expect them to happen I’m not nearly as frustrated and things go much smoother.
Tip #2: Load up on toys and activities. We actually just put a small TV in here so that I can throw on a quick show or movie when need be because if you’re a Mom you know that these little babes get bored easily. We have stocked this toy room with an array of different play options, little snacks, books and a TV when need be. Honestly since we’ve put more options up here she can keep herself content for a good hour and a half, sometimes more. That’s a win, win for everyone! Another tip for this tip, if you have an extra high chair you can put nearby, do it! Blake loves to chow down on snacks.
Tip #3: Save the phone calls, meetings and REALLY important things for nap time. I can usually get quite a bit done while she plays, but I still have to keep an eye on her while working and my attention isn’t 110% focused. So I always wait to do any phone meetings, calls or really important stuff until after I KNOW she’s asleep. There’s another one, make sure your babe is actually asleep because I’ve had a few instances where I hop on a call and she’s actually still partying in her crib..so there’s that.
What types of things do you do to keep your babes occupied while you get work done?!
