Oh hey there! I get asked a few everyday, so I figured why not answer some of them in a blog post. They’re random, they’re fun and well, y’all are about to find out just how boring my life really is. 😉 S0 let’s do this.
Q: How did you and Marcus meet?
A: Our friends set us up on a blind date, it’s actually a funny story. We HATED each other the first couple of weeks and eventually I convinced him he should just be in love with me already 😉 Now we’re married, with a baby–so clearly somehow it worked.
Q: Why did I start blogging in the first place?
A: I LOVE writing, it’s been a passion since I was a little girl. In fact, I have journals from when I was five years old–I just love writing things down. So I started blogging when I was about 18 years old, failed a few dozen times; blogged about fashion, quotes, pictures, hair, literally I’ve done it all and with a million different blog names. Finally I came up with a name I loved, Positively Oakes. Then I opened up a little Etsy shop as an add on to my blog, it did okay–but I knew I wanted to blog. So I continued pushing hard with my blog. I wrote about our infertility journey, people followed along and so on and so forth! It’s still a work in progress, but I love it.
Q: Do you make money from blogging?
A: I get asked this question multiple times a day and I hate talking money–I’m just not that person. But yes, I am so grateful to be able to work full time as a professional blogger and provide for my family. Quite honestly, I have all of you to thank for that–so seriously and I mean it, thank you! (Though side note–it’s not all fun and games and I do work 60+ hours a week, if not more. You can read all about what it’s like to be a professional blogger, here.)
Q: Do we want more kids?
A: YES! Eventually we do 🙂 We would love to adopt one day.
Q: How do come up with new blog topics?
A: They generally come to me in the middle of the night, ha! So I write every single thought, idea, whatever down in a notepad on my phone. If I don’t write it down, I will forget it –SO I ALWAYS WRITE IT DOWN. Haha! So when I do have writer’s block I can look back at my notes. For the most part though, I blog about real life. Things we are doing, things I’m struggling with, hardships/happiness in being a Mom, etc. so it comes natural to me!
Q: Have I ever thought about vlogging?
A: YES! I actually have a YouTube channel (here) and have been trying to slowly do more videos. If y’all want to tell me exactly what you want to see video wise let me know in the comments! Otherwise, it’ll probably be a bunch of videos of me dancing 😉
Q: Do we love living in Idaho?
A: I LOVE it! Seriously, I grew up in Southern California until I was about 15 and I would choose Idaho every time. Sorry Californians 😉 Moral of the story though, it’s great, it’s clean, it’s beautiful and it’s perfect for families! I just hope it stays that way…
Q: Do I still have my Etsy Shop?
A: It’s still open, but quite honestly I’m not sure for how much longer. Plus there’s only a few items listed. I just can’t keep up with it anymore, so it’ll probably close down soon. Though for all those asking about our Gobble Shirt tradition–don’t fret we will always sell those every year! 😉
Q: Do you have any advice for starting a blog or tips and tricks?
A: I actually wrote an e-book with all my knowledge on it! You can grab it, here. But my biggest piece of advice, be true to you, don’t force anything and be PATIENT. Like I mentioned before, I’ve done this for almost 8 years. In those 8 years there has been a lot of trial, error and fails– learn from them and grow 🙂
Q: Do I really dance all the time?
A: Yes, yes I do. Current favorite playlist: 2000’s Hits
Q: Favorite lipstick?
Q: How do I balance working and being a Mom?
A: Tears, a lot of tears. I’m kidding–kind of 😉 It’s honestly a work in progress. I have to take each day at a time or I get really overwhelmed. I use a calendar religiously though, make a lot of notes (for my forgetfulness) and my Mom watches Blake 2-3 days a week. I try really hard to spend quality time with Blake when I have it and work late after she goes to bed. Which leads to the next question…
Q: How do you make husband/wife time?
A: Again, it’s a work in progress..but we try really hard to have at least one date night a week! We also always take time at night before bed to snuggle, eat popcorn and watch TV.
Q: Is it hard to enjoy things as a family when you have to make sure it’s photographed and blogged about?
A: This question hit home to me. Quite honestly-yes, it used to be REALLY HARD to balance it. I’m a huge perfectionist so I freak about the little things. However, I’m learning and I’ve figured out that the best blog posts and the best pictures come from actually having fun and enjoying whatever we’re doing so. So is it hard? Sometimes, but for the most part not anymore–I’ve learned to just roll with it and have fun!
Q: How do I keep my house so clean?
A: Does that picture sum it up for you? 😉 It’s not clean 99% of the time. However I am a perfectionist and I like pretty/clean looking pics so I’ll usually pick up just that area for the picture. Ha! Yep–I’m that person. The reality is, I’m a Mom with an active one year old, my house ain’t clean.
Q: Who takes my pictures?
A: It’s generally either me, my husband or a self timer 😉 Sometimes I use a local photographer, but for the most part it’s us!
Q: What camera do I use?
Q: Favorite photo editing apps?
A: I use photoshop and Lightroom on my computer and then Snapseed, Retouch and A Color Story on my iPhone.
Q: What do I do in my spare time?
A: I’ll be honest, lately I haven’t had much of it..but I love being outside as much as possible, sitting by the fire in the fall/winter, trying new places to eat and snuggling up for a good movie! Really..anything and everything with my little family makes my heart so happy!
Q: How do you stay happy?
A: I heard something in church today, even the most perfect looking person/life has its flaws. My life the last few years has felt like one trial after another, so don’t let any pretty picture fool you. I try really hard to be totally honest in my captions/posts and share the hard days too because it’s normal, it’s life and it’s something we can all relate to. That being said, I’m slowly learning to just take each day at a time, have faith and not worry about what’s out of my control. That doesn’t mean it’s easy–because it’s not, but it’s progress and hopefully one day I’ll look back on these difficult days and say, “WE DID IT and look where we are now!”.
Q: What religion am I?
A: LDS/Mormon. I actually didn’t go to church much growing up (you can read about that, here) but I don’t know where I would be today without God. Seriously, this gospel has changed my life in ways I would have never imagined and it makes those trials I just talked about, manageable and gives me the strength to keep pushing forward.
Q: Will I be hosting more Positively Baby Showers besides just this one in October?
A: YES!! Stay tuned friends 😉 and if you haven’t nominated a Mom for the Utah one, run over (here) and do it!!
Q: Am I planning any other events?
A: Yes…and I can’t even wait to share them with y’all. Seriously stay tuned ladies!
Q: Where can I meet you?
A: I’m not even going to lie, this entire question went to my head. It’s fine. Excuse me while I dance to Spice Girls for a minute while sippin’ on a Dr. Pepper and my sunglasses on indoors. 😉 Okay, okay–back down to earth. If you’re in Idaho, we should already be friggin’ friends and if not, I will be speaking at Pinner’s Conference in Utah and Arizona (use the code “OAKES” for 10% off those tickets) and I’ve got a couple other surprises up my sleeve that will be announced in the next coming months!
Q: How did we come up with the name Blake?
A: I’ve always loved it…I convinced Marcus with Blake Lively and well..there it happened 😉
Well there’s the majority of them! If you have anymore questions ask me in the comments or email me! I’m off to dance with my main girl Blake.
