When Marcus and I were trying to get pregnant with Blake it felt like well, forever. The reality was–it did take a LONG time and I needed something to fill the void, keep me occupied and give me that feeling of Motherhood that I so badly longed for. So I begged (and I mean begged) Marcus for a pup. I would look online, look at the shelter, literally everywhere pups could be found and show him pictures pretty much all day, everyday. I mean, we always wanted a dog so it wasn’t something out of the random, but now I needed one then and now. We ended up going to Utah for a weekend for something with his family and I came across the sweetest, most perfect little puppy. I secretly scheduled an appointment to go meet him and then told the husband that day. Oops. Fortunately he agreed to come along and before I knew it we were actually taking him home! To say I was excited would be an understatement. Well, that pup is Howie who is now a huge part of our family.
Eventually I got pregnant and he would snuggle up next to my belly every chance he got. He was protective from day one and it was the sweetest thing. Blake was born and Puppy Howie loved her, he took about a day to get used to her, but then he didn’t leave her side (just like when I was pregnant). He would sleep right next to her when she was sleeping, followed her around once she started getting more mobile and always made sure people didn’t get too close. When Blake was about 7 months old we decided to get Puppy Howie a friend. We found the perfect little playmate locally and well…now we have Howie AND Doc. They’re both poodle mixes and though Doc is a little more hyper than Howie–they play all day and love Blake and that’s all that matters to me. They’re just as big a part of our family as anyone else. We take them everywhere that we can, Blake plays with them all day and they snuggle up next to us at bedtime. It’s the best. I could honestly watch them with Blake all the time because it’s just hte cutest thing ever. She lays her head on their back and they just curl up around her. Then when she’s ready to play they’re so patient and loving with her as she throws their toys a couple of inches in excitement! Things have changed since we first got tiny puppy Howie, but I think it’s been for the best and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I tell you this story BECAUSE there’s a new show out and it just hits my heart and I have to share it with y’all. It’s called Finding Fito and it’s all about “matchmaking” — only with humans and pups. Here’s where things get really great–they’re kicking things off for the holidays with Greater Good (an independent organization devoted to improving the health and well-being of people, pets, and the planet). They’re giving away $5,000 in cash grants to animal shelters and rescue groups across the U.S. and you can get involved in making this happen! All you have to do is:
- Post a pic of your pup on any social platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
- Use the hashtag #FindingFido because for every hashtag used they’’ll donate $1 to a Greater Good.
- You can even, nominate a shelter you admire by including their social handle in your post and they’ll automatically be entered into a weekly drawing for a $500 grant!
See, it’s easy peasy and well–for all my fellow pup lovers I know it’ll hit your heart like it does mine. Winners will be announced weekly on the Z Living site! Grab all the official rules and regulations, here.
