With the chaos of moving and well, just life, Blake’s bedtime routine has been one giant hot mess. In fact, until recently we were lucky if she was asleep by 11:30 and without one of us in the bed with her. There are just some nights, especially with being a working Mom, that I just can’t bring myself to making her “cry it out”. Instead I just want to lay there next to her, listen to her ramble on about who knows what and just snuggle with her until she eventually falls asleep.
Well, reality eventually soaked in and it was about time that I got my act together and worked on a real bedtime routine since well, we might be in a transition while we build a house, but we are going to be here for 8 months. SO that means transition or not, schedules need to be set and made. We’ve always had a “bedtime routine”, we do PJs, brush teeth, read, prayers and then tell each other a story while she lays there. It was just the part after that, that we have recently struggled with. 95% of the time Marcus ended up falling asleep in there because she didn’t want him to leave. So, we tried a few things, put in a Projectables and made a game plan.
Blake loves herself some princesses — literally, ALL the princesses. So when we saw that Jasco Projectables had a princess one, we knew that was going to be a huge hit. Currently, she’s obsessed with Belle so every night after our normal routine and a little story back and forth, we give her a kiss goodnight, let her turn the light off and then turn her (cool to the touch) projectables night light on. It’s the perfect little way to light up your babe’s room and essentially bring their favorite characters to life. It projects the picture onto the ceiling (or wherever you choose, up to 10 feet away) and has a little dial so you can choose from an array of options. Like I said, currently she’s on a Belle kick, so we have it on the picture of Belle when we plug it in and it projects onto her ceiling. They’re super cost effective by housing LED lights and it’s been the perfect way to make bedtime just a little more fun!
After we do that, we tell her we will be back to give her a kiss in 5 minutes if she stays in bed! Then we return in five minutes, give her a kiss and tell her we will be back again in 10 minutes if she stays in bed. Then generally (knock on wood) she falls asleep within that time frame. It’s been good, hopefully it continues this way and it’s great to make things a little more fun and keep her spirits up about the whole “bedtime” thing.
