This year I am trying really hard to do meaningful things for the holidays. I feel like Blake is at such a fun age, but also at an age where she is starting to understand things and where I am really setting the bar. She is a little sponge and just takes it all in, so I figured let’s get some good in that tiny little brain of hers! For awhile (no joke, zero self control) — I would let Blake pick out a toy from the dollar section at Target every time we went there, it was just kind of that special thing we did and well, it was a dollar. BUT before I knew it, it was turning into a habit everywhere we went and then the meltdowns came. So, we are working on nipping that in the butt right now. I want her to know that these things are earned from hard work, it’s not just an expectation. I want her to be kind and loving and never expect. So you see what I’m saying SPONGE. Which leads me to the entire point of this post…
As y’all know, the holidays are the one time of year you’ll actually find me in the kitchen baking, cooking, trying new things. I’m generally just not a huge cook. I’ll make easy things here and there and we eat the same dinners in rotation, sorry family. Well Blake has been loving helping me in the kitchen and it’s been extra special this year because we are so lucky to be with my parents while we build our house. And well, there’s just something about the holidays and surrounding yourself with family and traditions that makes your heart so happy.
Last weekend, we were baking and I thought — let’s make some treats to take to friends and families. You know — the perfect opportunity to show Blake that we can do some fun things and eat treats for ourselves, but sharing and giving is key. 😉 Right? At least I hope that’s what she’s getting from this. I mean, let’s be honest — she may have just had the most fun while we rang the doorbell and ran as fast as we could. I mean, what’s delivering treats without a little doorbell ditching? HA!
Anyways, so I’ve been working towards doing little things like this. When she gets a new toy, she has to give another one to someone else that doesn’t have that toy or donate it so that another baby can play with it, etc. Before Christmas I plan on going through her toys and having her pick out a certain number to donate. I just think that instilling these little things in their early years is so important.
So now that you’ve heard all about that and what’s on my mind, let’s chat treats because I know that’s really why some of y’all came! I know the way to your hearts (AND YOUR BELLIES. 😉 ) I figured, let me share my favorite Sugar cookie recipe for y’all to use. It seriously makes the SOFTEST cookies and they’re perfect for chowing down on yourself and you know, giving to your neighbors too 😉
Here’s what you’re going to need:
- 3.5 Cups Bob’s Red Mill Organic All Purpose Baking Flour (or their Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour)
- 1 ¼ Cups Bob’s Red Mill Fine Cane Sugar
- ½ Cup Butter (melted)
- 1 Egg
- 1 Egg yolk
- ¼ Cup Cream Cheese
- ¼ Cup Sour Cream
- 4 TSP of vanilla
- 1 TSP Bob’s Red Mill Baking Powder
- ⅓ TSP Salt
- Preheat the oven to 355 degrees.
- Start by mixing the dry ingredients in a bowl (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt)
- In a separate bowl mix the rest of the ingredients.
- Slowly add in the dry ingredients with the rest, while mixing in between each add.
- Once you have a smooth, fluffy mix, you can cut into the shapes you desire.
- Cook at 355 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Immediately put on cooling rack once baked to completion.
- Let cool, then frost and serve.
When you’re done, write down the recipe, throw a cute bag of Bob’s Red Mill Flour in a basket with some of the cookies and drop em’ off at your neighbor’s house!
I use Bob’s Red Mill as much as possible in my baking. Their products are honestly some of my favorite. They use whole grains, they have gluten free options and their products all still taste SO GOOD. I eat their oatmeal almost every morning and their Paleo pancake mix is delicious! I could honestly go on and on, but just trust me — whenever I use them for baking my treats taste better, are softer and well they always look good 😉
