When I asked a few weeks ago what kind of blog posts you guys wanted to see over the next month and have scheduled to go live when baby boy arrives, one of the biggest requests was – how we are getting Blake ready to be a sister or how I’m preparing to be a Mom of two. So I thought I’d dive in today about just that.
Honestly, I’m not really sure there’s any perfect “preparation guide” on how to getting ready to have two kids. So for that part, I’m spending as much time as possible with my sweet girl and just having faith the rest will work itself out and we will figure it out along the way. Kind of like becoming a parent for the first time – just learned as we went along. Made plenty of mistakes but overall just went with the roll of things and have done the best I know how to so far. I imagine bringing in a second will be the same. Doing the best I can. Doing the best WE can. Team effort. 😉
As far as preparing Blake to be a big sister – well, we haven’t done a “ton” of anything special. Honestly, she’s old enough that she understands it and she’s been right next to us during the whole IVF process and learned a heck of a lot more than most four year olds do about all of that (ya know, within reason that’s age appropriate ;)). My point though, she’s watched this for awhile, since last October when starting the whole process, so she understands what’s happening! Now, as far as sharing and all that goes – well, we will wing that and take it as we can go. I’m a little nervous of that aspect though just because it’s been just her for over four years sooooo fingers crossed that’s not terrible. Ha! But we have been slowly doing things like, having her pick things out for baby brother and go through her books to give some to him, etc. so I’m hoping that will help a little bit as far as that introduction goes. 😉
Anyways as far as “actual things” go and things we’ve done and planned, here’s a little list:
- Books: my friend gave us a great book (it’s cute and funny and in words she understands) about becoming a big sister. So we’ve been reading that a lot, as well as a few others I’ve bought. I’ll link them all below!
- Helper: I’ve been trying really hard to let her be involved in as much as possible, with as many things as possible. For example, helping decorate the nursery, get the hospital bags packed, pick out clothes, plan the baby shower, allll the things. I want her to feel involved and know how important she is in all of this too!
- Gifts: now, now, now, it’s not what you think 😉 we aren’t spoiling her with presents, haha! But we did get her a present “from baby brother” that he will “give” her at the hospital and she got him one to give to him when she meets him at the hospital. I’ve had a lot of people recommend doing this and I thought it was cute! Here’s what we got for her:
That’s honestly the main things we’ve done, nothing crazy! Like I said, I feel like these are some of those things that you just figure out as you go. I mean honestly, you it’s not something you can perfectly prepare for!
Soooo here we go 🙂 The countdown is on and I’m excited to see the changes!
